Larry has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 16 years. His journey began when he took his then six year old son to a class at the local recreation center. As he watched, he found that he wanted to get on the mat and try it for himself. He has been on the mats since. His coach at the recreation center was a young, Brazilian man by the name of Gustavo Dantas. He had a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and was teaching under Nova Uniao. The main school in Las Vegas for Nova Uniao was J-Sect Academy, and the head instructor there was a young, American named John Lewis. John is one of the original dirty dozen, which means that he was one of the first Americans to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Once Larry gained confidence on the mats he went from the recreation center to the main academy. He received his blue and purple belts from John Lewis, and had the privilege of training with some of the best in Jiu-Jitsu at J-Sect Academy - including Robert Drysdale, BJ Penn, Marc Laimon, Sean Spangler and many others. From J-Sect, Larry went on to train at Robert Drysdale's new gym in Las Vegas. Robert had received his black belt and become world champion plus Abu-Dhabi champion. There he trained under Sonny Nohara. He also trained at the affiliate school, Excel, where he trained with Chad Lyman. Chad brought a friend over from Oregon named Robert Follis. Robert Follis had coached Randy Couture and many MMA fighters before moving to Las Vegas. Under Robert Follis, Chad Lyman and Robert Drysdale Larry earned his brown belt. He continued to train at Robert Drysdale's gym once he moved closer to the main academy. In 2014 Larry and his family moved to St. Augustine, FL. He continued to go to Las Vegas every couple of months and train at Drysdale's. On one such visit, he was honored with his black belt by Robert. Now, he is proud and excited to open FOYA and teach all that he has learned throughout all of the years. Larry is passionate about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and about teaching.
